Trans Fats and the Dangers

I was reading an article the other day on foods that make you angry. One of the largest offenders that was listed was trans fats. Trans fats are fats that have been chemically changed and altered so that they do not look like regular fats that are found in nature. They do not fit well in the cell membranes of the cells within our body and because of this, they will alter the way neurotransmitters are received by the cell and if this happens to be a nerve, the trans fat can make you angry according the article.

Now you might ask why would they ever make trans-fats?

Everyone has heard that trans fats are bad for you in the news, but you might not understand why that is the case. As I said, trans-fats have altered chemically, so they are not like other fats found in nature. This chemical alternation is done because when you add it to certain foods like pastries, cookies, cakes, and other items, they can almost sit on the grocery store shelves forever without going bad. Obviously, companies like this because they can have a very long expiration date on their products and do not have to worry about much about freshness. This may be very good for the bottom line of food companies, but it very bad for the health of human beings.

These fats are so foreign, that they are not even metabolized by bacteria and as a result, you can set them out and they will practically never go rancid. Animals will not eat trans-fats, if that is the only ingredient, whereas normal fats would be consumed immediately.

There are two sure ways to avoid trans fats.

  1. Read your labels: Make sure that are no trans-fats listed on the ingredient list.
  2. Avoid deep fried foods: Fried foods tend to have trans-fats in them
